There are many opportunities provided to us, enabling all Australians to increase their level of physical activity, some of these include;
Walk to the shop to collect the paper, bread or milk each morning. This only takes 10 minutes, can add approximately 1,500 steps to your daily step count and burns off the equivalent energy as a piece of wholegrain toast?
Walk to the train or tram stop on your way to and from work each day. You could add up to 30 minutes of extra activity each day, save the environment from pollution and burn over 700 kilojoules.
Take the stairs at every opportunity you can, at work, at the shopping centre, wherever you come across them. Just walking up four flights of stairs adds an extra 100 steps to your daily count and is the equivalent in terms of energy burnt to walking half a kilometre. A much better move than taking the lift don’t you think?
Walk the dog each day and night. Not only are you exercising yourself, you are helping man’s best friend as well.
